La Cinquième Saison [Peter Brosens & Jessica Woodworth 2012]
Were there particular influences for either the look or story of The Fifth Season?
PB: Especially during the development period we are inspired by music and the arts. The paintings of Breughel, Goran Djurovic, Michaël Borremans, for instance. The music of Georges Gurdjieff, Nick Cave, Johann Sebastian Bach and Dmitri Shostakovich. Actually, we often conceive and create images by listening to music. We also love Adele, but she may inspire us for another film…
JW: Inspiration includes Marketa Lazarová, the masterpiece of Czech cinema. Theo Angelopoulos. Traditional Armenian music. Country dance evenings here in the
neighbourhood. The very real vanishing of the bees worldwide. The abuse of toxic fertilizers. The milk crisis. And as for the dialogues, the actors themselves proposed many of the lines during rehearsals.
PB: And then there is this great quote from Werner Herzog: “What have we done to our landscapes? We have embarrassed our landscapes!”
